Yarmouk Miniatures: Saadallah Wannous and the War on Stories

Here's my essay about Syria for N+1 magazine. I write about Mazen, my awesome Arabic teacher from Yarmouk, about revisiting the stories that I read with him after four years of war, and about the bravery and creativity of ordinary Syrians caught between two tyrannies (it's also about Tamerlane's 1401 siege of Damascus, hence the dramatic artwork).

NB: an updated version of this essay was  published in Issue 24 of N+1 magazine, which you can find here.
